Leadership on a Stick

leadershipstickIt’s State Fair time in Minnesota and that means vendors are vying for the most creative ways to put a variety of foods on a stick. It’s convenient for the fair-goer on the run. If only leadership could be done that way… HEY, wait a minute. That gives me an idea.

Most leaders I know would LOVE to do Leadership on a Stick. If only it could be that convenient and quick. I have to say I can’t really endorse this for the long run, but here are some ideas:

  1. On your commute to work, reflect upon why you originally wanted to be the CEO (or other executive leader). Remind yourself of the last time you got to live out that purpose.
  2. While you are walking through the building on your way to your office or to a first meeting, say hello/introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. Ask a couple questions about what they do, how long they’ve worked there or what it’s like to work at the organization. Spend a few minutes REALLY listening to the answer. Remember, you don’t just buy the food on a stick, spend a few minutes savoring it.
  3. While you are walking to your next meeting, think about one of your executive leaders. What stands out about them as a strength? Email that thought to them or share it with them the next time you see them.
  4. When you are going to lunch or grabbing a bite to eat at your desk, reflect upon the purpose/mission of your organization. What is still exciting and/or meaningful about that?
  5. At your next leadership meeting, ask that same question of your leaders. Encourage short answers, not long monologues.

Leadership on a Stick doesn’t take the place of regular meetings, one-on-ones, retreats or executive coaching. It won’t be sufficient to create or execute on your strategy, align your team, engage your employees or solve sticky financial problems. But, like some of the food at the State Fair, it just feels good to indulge yourself.
