Be Fearless: Commit to a Growth Mindset

Several years ago, I took a course from NTL Institute on Executive Team Building. The instructor, W. Brendan Reddy, had this quote on the wall of his classroom: “There are no leading-edge techniques, just leading-edge practitioners”.

At the time, I had been a consultant for 5 years and was acutely aware of just how much I didn’t know. One of my great fears was being “caught out”, having a client challenge me about something I “should know” about but didn’t and looking foolish in the process.

It amazes me how much my view has changed in the last 25 years. One of the most important things I have learned is not to fear not knowing, but instead to view it as an opportunity to learn. This has required making the decision to stop protecting myself and to instead relax, engage and stay present with curiosity when these situations arise.

Carol Dweck did a Ted Talk that has been viewed by over 7 million viewers. Here is how it is described on You Tube: “Carol Dweck researches “growth mindset” — the idea that we can grow our brain’s capacity to learn and to solve problems. In this talk, she describes two ways to think about a problem that’s slightly too hard for you to solve. Are you not smart enough to solve it … or have you just not solved it yet?”

This for me gets to the heart of what it means to be a leading-edge practitioner. It is not about how much you know. It is instead about how committed you are to learn and grow on a continual basis.

Being a leading-edge CEO Advisor means being a forever student of both Human Development and Business. On the human development side, TBG Advisors are continually deepening our knowledge regarding psychology, adult learning theory, neuroscience, leadership science, organizational transformation and change management, and spirituality. This knowledge is only useful to clients, however, when we make it practical. This requires curiosity and commitment to learning about our client’s industries, organizations, financials, and strategy (among many other issues) and having practical experience as leaders ourselves so we understand the challenges and pressures faced by our clients.

My colleagues and I have the great privilege to work with exceptional leaders and partnering with them to achieve their visions and aspirations for their teams and their organizations through CEO Advising and Coaching, Executive Team Development and Board Consulting. If you are looking for a committed partner to support you in achieving your goals and aspirations, send me an email. I’d love to talk with you.
