The One Holiday Gift I Hope You Received

The holiday season is officially over and it feels as though we have all hit the ground running with the start of a new year. Many begin the year with fresh new clothes, shiny new gadgets and a cadre of new “toys”. But, if there was one gift that you received this holiday season, I sure hope it was leisure. Not just time off from stress, schedules, to-do lists, appointments, meetings, and/or the pressure to get stuff done – though I hope you received that too! – but real leisure. The word leisure comes from a Latin root, “licere” which literally means to be permitted to be. Leisure simply means “to just be”. To be enough is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

As a leader, you are probably a high achieving, action-oriented, task-focused person who can’t wait to “climb that hill”. You likely get more done in a day than the average person, at home and at the office. You probably work hard, work out, read, cook, see friends, take care of others, and spend time in activities with your kids (or dogs) – or whatever – and fall into bed at the end of it all.  And your holiday season may have been more of the same, with travel and/or family get-togethers thrown in there.  And, you wouldn’t have it any other way.  It’s who you are and why you have made it to where you are.

But I also hope you got to just be enough this holiday season. You are, you know.
