The K-Shaped Economy: Why the Numbers Look Fine but the Business Feels Harder

Many CEOs we’re talking to have said some version of the same thing: the numbers look fine, and the business feels harder to run than it did a year ago.

What Is a K-Shaped Economy?

Part of the explanation is what economists call a K-shaped economy. The top earners are doing well and still spending, while a big share of consumers watch the cost of living outrun their paychecks.

A piece in Off The Ledger this month put numbers to the squeeze on businesses. Energy is up 35.3% over the past year, and producer prices rose 6.3%, the largest jump since September 2022. So companies are paying more to operate while many of their customers have less to spend.

Why Strong Holiday Sales Could Be Misleading

What worries us most is that holiday spending may still set records, because the top of the K keeps buying. A strong top line can hide a customer base that’s getting narrower and more fragile. Teams that trust the dashboard keep going until the easy choices are gone.

How Leadership Teams Navigate a K-Shaped Economy

The financial moves matter, things like hedging, supplier reviews and cost discipline. In our work at The Bailey Group, though, the companies that come through a stretch like this well have something else in common. Their CEO, CFO and senior leadership team read the market together, say what they’re seeing early and make hard calls as one team. They also take care of the people who are feeling this at home.

If you’re heading into 2027 planning and want a thinking partner on the leadership side of this, we’re always happy to talk.
