The Importance of Culture for Gen Z in the Workplace – From a Gen Z Employee

Upon graduating Bethel University in 2022, I entered the job market, eager to find the right fit. I wanted to find a company where I felt valued, where my work had meaning, where I could be myself, and where I could build high quality working relationships. When I was hired at The Bailey Group, I realized that what I had been seeking only scratched the surface of the intricacies and operations of a flourishing workplace culture.

I have the privilege of collaborating daily with teammates from various generations. Earlier this year, Forbes wrote:

“Baby Boomers are known for their strong work ethic and loyalty, Generation-X is recognized for its independence and entrepreneurial spirit, and Millennials are celebrated for their tech-savvy nature and collaborative approach.”

As Generation Z makes its transition into the professional world, the importance of workplace culture continues to grow and adjust. We bring unique values and ideas that are reshaping business operations. Understanding the significance of culture for Gen Z is beneficial for companies attempting to both attract and retain this fresh group of workers.

Authenticity and Transparency

Authenticity and transparency are qualities highly valued by Gen Z in the workplace. Authenticity acts to provide clarity. Not only does clarity minimize confusion, but it also offers the employee a glimpse into how their responsibilities flow into the organization’s broad scope of function and vision. Transparency creates a trusting and loyal workplace, aiding in a greater sense of value, safety, and belonging. These qualities introduce an element of autonomy to a workplace’s culture- allowing individuals the opportunity to express themselves and their thoughts through their own unique lens and perspective.

Work-Life Balance

Gen Z places a lofty value on work-life balance. A culture that promotes flexibility, such as remote work options and flexible hours, is highly appealing to this generation. As turnover rates consistently climb, a deliberate approach to retention of particularly Gen-Z employees is to adopt and foster a culture that prioritizes overall well-being. With mental health being prioritized, the company is more likely to see increased productivity, lower stress levels, and higher job satisfaction among their employees- all of which will contribute to the company’s overall revenue and growth.

Purpose and Impact

According to Thought Exchange’s most recent report, over 95% of Gen Z employees say it’s important they feel valued, included, and empowered at work. This is a generation that is propelled by purpose and meaning. They seek roles that align with their personal values and contribute to societal good. Gen Z seeks to find companies that drive to positively influence society and the environment.

Workplace culture is more than just a buzzword; it is a crucial component of a company that affects employees’ professional satisfaction, career decisions, and retention. It influences all generations, from those who have driven the company’s success, to those who are just starting their careers. Companies that focus on developing a culture of authenticity, inclusivity, work-life balance, and purpose will not only attract Gen Z talent but also cultivate a motivated workforce driving towards future success.
