Meet Edward
Dr. Bergmark enjoys bringing his hard-won knowledge and perspective to those who are hoping to live more fulfilling, productive, meaningful, and joyful lives.
Aside from professional development, life has tempered me with numerous challenges. My wife and I lost our first child as an infant. At age 47, my wife suffered a catastrophic accident, leaving her completely paralyzed from the neck down. At the time, we had two boys, ages 13 and 14. While building Optum, I raised them and managed to eventually bring my wife home, where she required around the clock care for lung suctioning, feeding through a gastric tube, and being regularly turned to avoid pressure sores. I was widowed 9 years after the accident. My point is that I know first-hand that at times we are all required to bear burdens that seem completely unbearable. By bringing care and support to one another, we make the unbearable bearable.
Solutions
I look forward to bringing my many years as an executive, business leader, and licensed psychologist to interactions with professionals who are striving to increase their effectiveness and satisfaction in their work and personal lives.
Industries
My primary interests are healthcare and education. I am interested in individuals and companies with a meaningful social mission.
Experience
I founded Optum and grew it to a company with over 24 million covered individuals. I know well the challenges and loneliness of building and running a successful organization. Following what I thought was retirement, I have invested in a number of companies and served on boards, such as Oak Street Health (from inception until IPO), Concert Health (from Inception), Embold Health (from inception), TCS Education System (Chair of the Board), The Chicago School of Professional Psychology (Previous Chair of the Board), and The Kansas Health Science Center (a new medical school with the first class entering this August).

Personal Interests
For every minute of the day, there are at least 10 things I would like to be doing. There are few things that do not interest me. At age 71, I just want to keep the joyful ride going as long as possible.
